ChatGPT saved memory is full — what to do

Fix the message, then stop it coming back

ChatGPT's memory is a small persistent store of facts it keeps about you across chats — your name, your preferences, ongoing projects. When that store hits its cap, you get the "saved memory full" message and ChatGPT stops adding new memories until you clear space.

Your chat history is separate and unaffected. Only the persistent memory feature is paused.

Clear memory (fastest fix)

Open ChatGPT and go to Settings → Personalization → Memory.
Click Manage to see every memory ChatGPT has saved.
Delete the ones you don't need with the trash icon, or use Clear all memories to reset.

Once you're under the limit, ChatGPT will start saving new memories automatically.

Prune, don't wipe

Clearing everything is easy but you'll lose useful context — preferences, tone, ongoing projects. Skim the list first and keep:

Facts you'd type again in every new chat.
Preferences (tone, formatting, unit system).
Recurring people, projects, or roles.

Delete anything short-term, one-off, or already out of date.

Stop hitting the limit

The memory feature is designed for a handful of durable facts, not a knowledge base. Three approaches that scale further:

Custom instructions. Move stable preferences into custom instructions instead of relying on memory.
